Our strategy: Trust in water
This section of the website sets out how we will work with others for the benefit of customers of water and wastewater services and wider society in England and Wales both now and in the future.
It explains how we will work with all the different bodies that have an interest in these services and our vision for what we can achieve together.
Meeting the challenges for water: trust and confidence
Our shared vision for the water sector in England and Wales is one where customers and wider society have trust and confidence in vital public water and wastewater services.
A leading, trusted and respected regulator
Our vision for Ofwat is to be working at the leading edge, trusted and respected, challenging ourselves and others to build trust and confidence in water.
The duties for most of our work as an economic regulator are laid down in section 2 of the Water Industry Act 1991 (WIA91) as amended.
Who we are
We are the economic regulator for water and sewerage services in England and Wales and we are a non-ministerial government department. We were established in 1989 when the water sector in England and Wales was privatised.
Who we work with
We work closely with many other organisations so that together we can enable the water sector to deliver our shared vision .
We set out our priorities and plans in our five-year business plan and forward programme each year.
We monitor our own performance in delivering our strategy using a number of performance indicators.
We report to the UK Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales on our performance in our annual report and accounts.
Our values and standards of behaviour
We are committed to the highest standards of openness and accountability.
