What we do
As the economic regulator of the water and sewerage industry in England and Wales, we are here to make sure that the water companies provide household and business customers with a good quality service and value for money. We do this by:
- making sure that the companies provide customers with a good quality, efficient service at a fair price
- limiting the prices companies can charge and making sure that bills are kept as low as possible
- monitoring the companies’ performance and taking action, including enforcement, to protect consumers’ interests
- setting the companies challenging efficiency targets
- making sure the companies deliver the best for consumers and the environment in the long term
- encouraging competition where it benefits consumers.
We make our decisions independently of the Government.
You can find out more about what we do in our strategy document, which sets out our long-term approach to regulating the water and sewerage sectors in England and Wales. Our latest annual report also contains a review of what we did in the last year.
As we are the economic regulator, we do not have responsibility for all aspects of the water and sewerage industry. Depending on the nature of your enquiry, you may need to contact a different organisation. You can find out about other organisations in Useful contacts.
