Our approach to regulation
The duties for most of our work as an economic regulator are laid down in section 2 of the Water Industry Act 1991 (WIA91) as updated by section 39 of the Water Act 2003. A number of key documents set out our overall approach to regulation:
- Our strategy 'Delivering sustainable water’ sets out how we intend to regulate the water and sewerage sectors over the long term.
- Our code of practice, How we do our job, sets out how we discharge our powers and functions.
- A separate document, Having your say, explains the rules we aim to follow when carrying out formal written consultations.
Our Board must also follow their rules of procedure – and all of our staff must also adhere to the civil service code of conduct.
