Customer related organisations

Consumer Council for Water (CCWater)
CCWater represents customers' interests and investigates complaints from customers about their water company in England and Wales.

Trading Standards Central
Trading Standards Officers can advise on independent water meter tests.

Regulators

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
Defra is the government department responsible for all aspects of water policy in England, including water supply and resources, and the regulatory systems for the water environment and the water industry.

Welsh Assembly Government
The Welsh Assembly Government is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Wales, including the economy, health, education, and local government. It develops water policy in Wales.

Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) is responsible for assessing the quality of drinking water in England and Wales, taking enforcement action if standards are not being met, and appropriate action when water is unfit for human consumption.

Environment Agency
The Environment Agency has responsibility for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. It also has a duty to secure the proper use of water resources.

Water Industry Commission for Scotland
The Water Industry Commission for Scotland monitors Scottish Water's financial, investment and customer service performance, and has the statutory duty to determine price limits.

Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation
The Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation regulates water and sewerage services in Northern Ireland.

This website, maintained by the water companies in the south of England together with the Environment Agency, provides up-to-date information on how to beat the drought plus details of the latest restrictions.

Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE)
The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering is the UK's professional and technical body for all plumbing and heating professionals.

Water Aid
WaterAid is an international charity dedicated to helping people who do not have access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

Water Regulations Advisory Scheme
The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme is the organisation involved in the testing of water fittings on behalf of the water companies.

Water UK
Water UK is the trade association which represents all UK water and wastewater companies.

Waterwise
Waterwise is focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK by 2010 and building the evidence base for large scale water efficiency. Waterwise provides assistance to households, businesses, media and the Government.

The Office of Fair Trading is responsible for making markets work well for consumers. It promotes and protects consumer interests throughout the UK, while ensuring that businesses are fair and competitive.
