The report summarises how the regulated water and sewerage companies and water only companies in England and Wales performed in 2006-07 in delivering their long-term plans to balance the supply and demand for water. It includes information about each company's ability to provide its planned level of service. It also presents information about leakage and water efficiency, both of which contribute to the overall security of supply.
The data is drawn from the 2006-07 June returns that the companies submitted to us.
The key messages for this year are:
Seven water companies in the south-east England restricted their consumers' water use following the long drought in the south-east of England which began in 2004.They also increased their water efficiency activities and made extra efforts to tackle leakage.
The majority of companies are on track to deliver planned security of supply improvements by 2009-10.
Following the legal undertaking we secured from Thames in 2005-06 for failings in relation to security of supply and leakage, the company has achieved the targets we set for 2006-07.
We have, however, taken enforcement action against Severn Trent over its deteriorating security of supply and the failure to meet its annual leakage target for the second year in succession.
We have been carrying out a review of our approach to leakage targets, which will lead to improvements in target setting for the 2009 price review. We have also introduced water efficiency targets for the first time.
