Applying for a water supply licence

About water supply licences

A water supply licence allows you to access an appointed water company's supply system to supply water to eligible premises. You can then compete with them to serve customers.

About your application

This section of the website sets out:

You can apply for a water supply licence through Business Link, or if you prefer by downloading an application form.  Applying through Business Link uses your Government Gateway account. If you already have a Government Gateway account you will need to log in before you can start filling in the application form. If you don't have a Government Gateway account you will need to create one.

If you are interested in becoming a water supply licensee you should also read our guidance on applying for a water supply licence. This guidance is statutory guidance under the Water Supply Licence (Application) Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/1638).

You must send us a signed application containing all the information and documentation set out in the relevant application regulations together with payment of the fee.

You can send applications either:

  1. by email: casemanagementoffice@ofwat.gsi.gov.uk, or
  2. by post: Case Management Office, Ofwat, 7 Hill Street, Birmingham, B5 4UA
