Having problems paying your bill? Free meter option

You may find that you can reduce the size of your bill by having a water meter fitted. At present, about one-third of households in England and Wales have a water meter installed. Your charges will then be calculated according to the amount of water you use plus a standing charge. Details of metered charges are available on the household metered charges section of our website.

A meter can be particularly helpful if you live in a house with a high rateable value, or if you use only a small amount of water. Your water company will be able to advise you on whether or not a water meter is likely to save you money.

Water companies are required to install water meters to domestic properties free of charge.

We have a meter saving calculator which can help you decide whether you would be better off with a meter.
You can also contact your water company for advice and some company websites also have an on-line calculators.

If you choose to have a meter fitted but then find that you preferred your previous charging method, provided you request the change within 12 months, your company will allow you to revert to your previous charging method.

Further information on water metering, including details about where the meter will be fitted, and how quickly it will be fitted, is available in our information note.
