PN 22/08

29 July 2008
Ofwat announces new Directors

Ofwat announced today that Cathryn Ross would be joining the water regulator as Director of Markets on 8 September 2008. Cathryn will play a key role in working to achieve Ofwat's aim of introducing competition where it will benefit consumers.

Her other responsibilities will include enforcement, licensing and tackling anti-competitive behaviour under the Competition Act 1998.

Cathryn Ross currently works at the Competition Commission where she has worked on a number of high profile merger and market investigations over the past five years. Before that Cathryn held senior economist posts at the Office of the Rail Regulator and Oftel.

She said: "I am delighted to be joining the Ofwat team at this exciting time. I look forward to leading the development and delivery of strategic goals on competition and market development."

This announcement follows the appointment of George Day to the position of Director of Network Regulation with Ofwat in June 2008. George joined Ofwat in 1999 as a senior economist, and his last post was Head of Asset Strategy. Before joining Ofwat he worked as an economist on overseas development projects and consultancy.

Director of Network Regulation George Day said:

"I am very pleased to be leading Ofwat's work on network regulation and look forward to working with the team."

In his new role, George's responsibilities will include policy on asset strategy, environment and quality enhancements, water resource economics, efficiency assessment and climate change.

Ofwat Chief Executive Regina Finn said:

"The appointment of Cathryn and George to the Ofwat senior management team will ensure we can continue to deliver the high quality professional service that is expected of Ofwat and lead the development of key strategic initiatives in the sector."
