International comparisons - Canada
Much of the public water supply in Canada is provided by municipally-owned infrastructure. It is subject to levels of finance and quality standards set at a provincial level in accordance with government guidelines. In general, the municipalities are responsible for setting water prices. Depending on the financial restrictions and subsidies the provincial government provides, bills can vary from very low to higher full-cost pricing.
Of the ten Canadian utilities included in this report, Metro Vancouver, Region of Peel and City of Vancouver are similar in size to a larger water only company in England and Wales. The other utilities serve smaller populations than the companies in England and Wales. Occupancy rates are higher than those in England and Wales but the mains length per property is similar.
We have a benchmarking partnership with the Canadian National Water and Wastewater Benchmarking Initiative.
