International comparisons - Scotland
The regulatory framework in Scotland is now very similar to that in England and Wales. Water and sewerage services are provided by Scottish Water, a public sector corporation, which is regulated by:

Since November 2006, water and sewerage services to business customers have been provided by a separate licensed supplier, Business Stream, established by Scottish Water. Since 1 April 2008, business customers in Scotland have been able to choose to buy retail services from a number of different suppliers, including Business Stream.
Scottish Water operates in the most sparsely populated area in Britain. Otherwise, the climate is similar to Wales and the north of England; and the population served, water delivered and mains length per property are within the range of companies in England and Wales. In terms of connected properties, Scottish Water, which serves five million consumers, is similar in size to a large water and sewerage company in England and Wales.
