International comparisons - water quality

Drinking water quality is very high in England and Wales. The Drinking Water Inspectorate provides us with annual figures on the compliance of England and Wales companies with Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations. Last year, we published these figures in our 'Levels of service for the water industry in England and Wales 2006-07' report.

Meaningful comparisons of water quality can only be made between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In Scotland and Northern Ireland the equivalent information is collected and published in annual reports by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

All EU member states must comply with the standards set out in the Drinking Water Directive. The European Commission publishes a report on European drinking water quality for each three-year monitoring period.
