Regulating the Industry
You are here: Ofwat > Regulating the Industry
We regulate the 21 regional monopoly water companies in England and Wales:
- 10 provide both water and sewerage services; and
- 11 are water only companies.
We do this by:
- making sure that the companies provide customers with a good quality, efficient service at a fair price;
- monitoring the companies’ performance and taking action, including enforcement, to protect consumers’ interests; and
- setting the companies challenging efficiency targets.
Every week the companies invest more than £94 million in maintaining and improving services. Their annual turnover is £9.2 billion.
