How we use your personal information

The Environment Agency, Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) operate StreamLine: the regulatory advice service for water innovators.  When you submit an enquiry your personal data (i.e. information relating to you) is shared with each of these regulators who will each be the Controller for your personal data they receive.

A Controller determines how and why personal data is processed. Each regulator has their own policy explaining your data protection law rights, how the regulators will handle your personal data and provides other details in relation to the use of your personal data:

The personal data we need

The personal data we (The meaning of “we” throughout this document is the regulators operating Streamline i.e. The Environment Agency, Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and the Water Services Regulator (Ofwat) collect when you submit your query via the streamline portal includes your name, address and contact details phone numbers and email addresses.  We collect this data  to carry out our relevant statutory functions, principally those under the Water Industry Act 1991 and Water Resources Act 1991, including in relation to resolution of customer complaints. This use of your personal data is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest (Article 6(1)(e) of the UK GDPR refers), i.e. to provide advice or a response in relation to the query which you have submitted.

What we do with your personal data

We use the personal data to respond to your enquiry, which will be submitted to DWI, EA and Ofwat.

Any personal data that you provide directly to the StreamLine service or we input on your behalf may be viewable by the IT Service Provider, which hosts and assists in the processing of the data for us through the StreamLine service.   They may have access to some of your data for the purpose of analytics that assist us in the improvement and optimisation of our service. Any data that they process is under a maintenance contract. They do not use any data contained within the service for their own usage.

We will not publish your personal data.  However, we may publish the question and answer we provide as a Frequently Asked Question.

We will not disclose your personal data to any party outside DWI, EA or Ofwat without your explicit consent, except where the law requires such disclosure.

How long we keep your personal data

When the consent period for your notifications has expired and we have received all the required shipment recovery information for that notification, we will keep your personal data as outlined in the retention and disposal policy for each regulator.

You have the right to make a complaint about the use of your data at any time. Make a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO – the data protection supervisory authority).
