Attributes and behaviours

Throughout the selection process, we will be looking for evidence of our SAILOR values. We will also assess you on the following attributes and behaviours that are essential for success on the programme. These are defined more fully in our Framework for Success.

As this is a graduate programme, you must have graduated within the last three years, or be due to graduate in 2024.  We’re particularly keen to hear from you if you have a relevant post-graduate degree.

For the Economics programme we require:

  • We are looking for colleagues with a strong academic foundation in economics. You will need to have (or be on target to achieve) at least a 2:2 degree in economics, or a subject with a significant microeconomics component. We’re also keen to hear from you if you have a relevant post-graduate degree in economics or a subject with a significant industrial organisation or financial economics component. As this is a graduate programme, you must have graduated already, or be due to graduate in 2023, and have no more than three years’ work experience following your graduation.
  • A strong understanding of key microeconomic concepts, in particular why, when and how Governments intervene in markets. An ability to communicate this knowledge and its application clearly and effectively.
  • An enthusiasm for using data analysis and modelling to solve problems.
  • An excellent ability in applying this knowledge to solve problems in practical situations.
  • A strong understanding of key microeconomic concepts, in particular why, when and how Governments intervene in markets. An excellent ability to communicate this knowledge and its application clearly and effectively.
  • An ability to use data analysis and modelling to solve problems.
  • An understanding of economic appraisal and evaluation and their application.

For the Policy and Casework and Enforcement programme we require:

  • You will have (or be on target to achieve) at least a 2:2 degree in a numerical, analytical, research, environmental or business-related discipline, such as (but not limited to) economics, politics, business management, law, accounting and finance, history, environmental engineering or geography. As this is a graduate programme, you must have graduated already, or be due to graduate in 2024 and have no more than three years’ work experience following your graduation.
  • An understanding of economic policy and how it is used by regulators.
  • An interest in qualitative analysis and values.

For the Data programme we require:

  • You will have (or be on target to achieve this year) at least a 2:2 degree in a numerical, analytical, environmental or business-related discipline, such as (but not limited to) economics, accounting and finance, environmental engineering, maths, physics or chemistry. We’re particularly keen to hear from you if you have a relevant post-graduate degree. As this is a graduate programme, you must have graduated already, or be due to graduate in 2023, and have no more than three years’ work experience following your graduation.
  • An understanding of the relevance and potential impact in data and analysis for decision making.
  • Experience of using analytical or other approaches to gain insights and draw conclusions from data.
  • Use of software – such as spreadsheets, statistical packages or programming languages – to address data issues.

For the legal programme

We will be enrolling you onto the solicitor apprenticeship (Level 7) and will sponsor you through your SQE exams as part of this programme. Therefore we require:

  • You will have (or be on target to achieve this year) at least a 2:1 in law, with a strong academic background for A levels and GCSE’S and be eligible to be enrolled on the solicitor level 7 apprenticeships.
  • An interest in providing high quality, timely and solutions-focussed legal advice across a number of Directorates, workstreams and projects.
  • An interest in delivering solutions-focussed legal advice on the development and implementation of policy objectives and/or the implementation of strategic government projects and programmes.
  • Experience of successfully applying analytical skills in complex situations.
  • Experience of effective and efficient planning, including prioritisation and delegation.
  • Be able to demonstrate effective problem solving, demonstrating critical thinking, decision making and information processing.
